I do this fun thing now where when I feel overwhelmed, exhausted or just plain “done,” I leave.
Yeah, I literally get up and leave.
There’s a ridge between my emotions and thoughts. Sometimes there’s one between me and social cues.
When I feel emotionally done, they are now off and I am now a robot who has been rerouted to “home.”
Some fun ways to achieve this in your own life:
When everyone else goes to grab a drink say, “Yeah I’ll be right there!” AND LEAVE
When someone suggests going to another venue, say, “Eh I don’t want to go there, I’m gonna go home.”
Use your instincts. While you’re drunk, tap into the animal inside that can smell the alcohol levels lingering on other people. When it becomes high enough that you can disappear without anyone noticing, RUN. But…be careful and don’t fall down.
When it’s a night of a new moon, tell someone, “the moon looks beautiful tonight” AND RUN. The lack of moonlight helps you disappear.
When someone texts you the next day asking where you ran off to, ask them, “where does ANYONE go?” and add #mood. No one is emotionally equipped to continue that conversation.
All jokes aside, if you want to leave a situation do it. Stop worrying about being nice. You don’t need an excuse. You don’t need to prove that you can do ALL THE THINGS. “Hey guys, I’m heading out!” Should be a relatively painless goodbye. It doesn’t even have to be an emotionally heavy situation. Stop worrying so much about being polite and listen to your personal boundaries.
If not, use my tips above. I’ve used them all at some point and they work 3 out of 7 times.
